About the LU Business Courses

I just completed a LU business course.  Where will I find my final grade?

Laurentian University no longer sends out paper notification of grades.  Therefore, you must access your final grade through WebAdvisor.  To access WebAdvisor, follow the instructions provided under the left hand navigation bar “WebAdvisor & GroupWise”.

Direct link to instructions: http://cga.laurentian.ca/hbcom/student/fcontent/webadvisor_&_groupwise/index.asp

A member of my group has not been active in the online environment for some time.

What should my group do?

Each student should communicate their availability to the group on a weekly basis.  When a student is “missing” for a period of time that is unexpected, it is normal for group members to worry about this student's whereabouts and their ability to participate in the weekly discussions and group assignments.  It has happened in the past that students experienced technical difficulties or had to tend to emergency situations.

If a student has been “missing” for more than a 72 hour period, the group should alert the instructor. The instructor will in turn inform the management team at Laurentian and they will verify if the student is experiencing technical difficulties or require support.  The instructor can also provide the group with advice on how to proceed with the group work.

Two members of my group have withdrawn from the course.

Will I be assigned to another group?

In some instances where a substantial portion of the group has had to withdraw from the course and the ability of the team to work effectively in the online environment has been compromised, the instructor will dismantle the team and reassign students to other groups. This scenario is most likely to happen in courses where the groups are small such as OM1 and MM1.

Does LU provide practice exams for each course?

Yes. A minimum of one practice exam is provided to students.  The practice exam is available through the course content held in EdNet.

What is the minimum mark required in a LU business course?

Students must achieve a minimum of 60% in each LU business course, including the Internship.  A student who receives a mark of less than 60%, must retake the course and achieve a mark of at least 60% on the second attempt.

I completed a LU business course a few months ago and cannot find my final mark on the  OLE.  Where is it?

All official LU marks will only be posted in the WebAdvisor system.  They will not be posted on the OLE under the Gradebook. For more information on WebAdvisor, please click on the “WebAdvisor” link in the left navigation bar.

I don't agree with my mark.  What should I do?

During the course:

Please communicate with your instructor in the first instance.  Your instructor should be able to provide you with a clear explanation of the mark obtained.  If you are not satisfied with this response, you may communicate with the course coordinator (information provided in EdNet in your Inbox).

After the course:

If you are unsatisfied with your final mark, please communicate with the program manager and she will put you in touch with your instructor.  If you are not satisfied with the decision of your instructor, please follow the guidelines for the “Grade Appeal Process”.  This information is available under the “Program Regulations” web page – see the left navigation bar for this link.

I am currently completing a prerequisite course for the COMM 4005/SP1 course.  Can I enroll for it even though I haven't completed the prerequisite yet?

Yes. You may enroll in COMM 4005/SP1 if you are currently completing the final prerequisite course.  For example, if you are completing OR1 and you have successfully completed MM1 and OM1, you may then enroll for the SP1 course that is set to begin in the next session.

If you were to fail the last prerequisite course, LU will request that you withdraw from COMM 4005/SP1 course.

Can I defer my examination to the next examination session?

Yes, you may defer your examination.  Please contact your CGA provincial/territorial/regional or international program office for regulations regarding the deferral process.

I failed my course. Can I write a supplemental examination?

No.  Supplemental examinations are not allowed for any of the LU business courses.  If you fail an LU business course, you have two options:  1) appeal the final mark; or 2) retake the LU business course.

Please review the academic regulations regarding the “Course evaluation method and grade” in the “Program Regulations” section of this website.

Enrolment information

Can I enroll for two LU business courses in one session?

Yes, you are allowed to take up to two LU business courses in one session. However, you are strongly encouraged to first take one LU business course and then decide if taking two courses at once is feasible for your schedule, work and family commitments.

Do I need to register early to guarantee my enrolment in a course?

Although every effort is made to ensure students are able to take the courses they want in each session, LU does have the right to limit the number of students in each course.  As such, it is important to register early!

Can I enroll for a LU business course through WebAdvisor?

The WebAdvisor system (LU data system that holds transcript and final grade information) has disabled the registration function for all students in the online H.B.Com program. You must contact your provincial/territorial CGA affiliate or international Program Office to enroll for courses.

How many courses do I need to take to remain active in the program?

You must enroll in at least one LU business course per academic year to remain active in the online H.B.Com program.

Additional Credit Requirements

How do I know if I have to complete some additional credits?

You will receive a degree requirements form with your letter of offer.  The form lists the LU business courses, CGA courses and additional credits that you need to complete in order to receive the H.B.Com degree.

If you have not received this form or can no longer find it, please contact the Student Services Coordinator at Laurentian University to obtain a copy.

I recently completed a course at another university and plan to take a second course to fulfill my additional requirements.  When should transcripts be sent to LU?

Please wait for all of your courses to be completed before sending transcripts to Laurentian University.

Can I enroll for LU Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) courses through WebAdvisor?

The WebAdvisor system (LU data system that holds transcript and final grade information) has disabled the registration function for all students in the online H.B.Com program. You must therefore complete the Centre for Continuing Education registration form  http://www.laurentian.ca/cce/AdmReg/Forms.html

available on the CCE website.

Internship

Can I complete my internship at my current work place?

Yes, you should either complete your internship at your current place of work or with a non-profit organization that you are familiar with.  The internship is not a work placement, you must complete a work related project.

Do I need to complete my internship project during regular work hours?

Although the internship project centres around your formal workplace, the bulk of the work should be completed during your own time.  Meetings with your supervisor, other employees and time spent obtaining internal information pertaining to your project might be required during regular work hours.

My current situation will not allow for the completion of the internship.  Are there other options available to me?

Yes, you may enroll in COMM 4405/HC1 instead of the internship.  You must inform the Program Manager of your decision before enrolling for the COMM 4405/HC1 course.

Can I complete my internship at anytime?

You must successfully complete both COMM 2035/MM1 and COMM 2045/OR1 before commencing the internship project.  It is recommended that both courses be completed (or near completion) before submitting the internship proposal.
